Sedation Dentistry

How would you like to go to the dentist completely relaxed? Wouldn’t it be great to sit down in the dentist’s chair with no fear or anxiety? Tons of people have issues when they go to the dentist, whether pain-related, stress, sensitive teeth or an easily trigger gag reflex. Your dentist wants to make your visit as easy as possible, and this is where dental sedation can come in. Two easy procedures can make a world of difference and might even have you rethinking your opinion on the dentist

For those who would like to minimize anxiety.

IV Sedation

At 904 Dental Care, we prioritize patient comfort and safety, especially during procedures like wisdom teeth removal. For patients who may feel nervous, we offer IV Sedation (also known as Intravenous Sedation) or deep sedation, which help make your experience calm and less stressful. Here is a closer look at IV sedation, how it works, and why it can be an excellent option for wisdom teeth extraction.

What is IV Sedation?

IV Sedation is a form of sedation where anesthesia is administered directly into your bloodstream through a small intravenous line (IV), usually placed in the hand or arm. Unlike general anesthesia, which puts you entirely to sleep, IV sedation keeps you in a deeply relaxed state where you will be mostly unaware of the dental procedure. Many patients feel barely conscious or as if they are having a good sleep. This is especially helpful for more apprehensive patients.

Why Choose IV Sedation for Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Wisdom teeth removal can involve sensations and sounds that make some patients anxious. IV sedation helps you feel calm and comfortable during the entire procedure. It can be an ideal option for anyone with:

  • dental anxiety or fear
  • complex dental procedures
  • sensitivity to dental sounds or sensations
  • strong gag reflex
  • difficulty sitting still for an extended time

With IV sedation, you will be able to relax in the dental chair. Most patients remember little to nothing about the procedure afterward.

How Does IV Sedation Work?

  1. Preparation: Our trained dental team will place a small IV line to administer the sedation medication into your hand or arm.
  2. Sedation: You will feel relaxed almost immediately after the medications are administered to start your state of deep relaxation. You will still be able to respond to questions or instructions if needed, but sensations of the procedure will be minimal or nonexistent.
  3. Procedure: During the wisdom tooth extraction, you will remain calm and comfortable. Our highly-trained team will monitor your vital signs throughout the process, ensuring your safety every step of the way.

Post-Sedation Recovery: The sedation effects will wear off gradually after the procedure. A friend or family member will drive you home. You will feel sleepy for a few hours and possibly the remainder of the day.

Oral Sedation

A more advanced form is oral sedation. All you have to do is take a pill about an hour or so before your procedure, and the dosage typically varies based on what kind of work you are having done. The medication will make you feel drowsy and relaxed, although you should remain awake. In some cases, though, you might get so comfortable that you fall asleep in which case a light shake will wake you up at the end of your visit. After your visit, you might still be a little sleepy, so you will be required to come with someone else who will safely get you home.

Skipping out on routine dental visits can be harmful to your health, so whichever method you and your dentist choose, it should help make the dreaded dentist visit a thing of the past.

Both of these forms of conscious sedation also help to decrease the gag reflex. If you gag easily, your days of dreading a trip to the dentist can now be over. Conscious sedation by either method is also ideal if you have sensitive teeth or a low pain threshold, or if you just find it hard to sit in the dentist’s chair for an extended period.

We understand and acknowledge any anxieties you have, and we take care of them so that we can move on to provide you with excellent dental care, whether you want implants or to get your teeth cleaned.
